The specifications described below are indicative and do not take into consideration the special circumstances of an installation - especially in terms of the number of operators and their networking issues.

RDBMS - Database Server Software

The RDBMS must be selected based on criteria relating to the bases themselves. The parameters considered for the selection of the RDBMS type should not include Soft1.

SoftOne equally recommends the two predominant RDBMS brands, without any feature of the applications and services favoring either option.

RDBMS (Online mode)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2017  64-bit
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019  64-bit
  • Oracle Database 10g/11g
RDBMS (Offline mode)Microsoft SQL Server SQL Express 2017 & 2019Microsoft SQL Express 2012 & 2014

Collations:

In case of Microsoft SQL Server, the required Collation Parameter of the base should be SQL_LATIN1_General_CP1253_CI_AI.

In case of Oracle, the required Collation parameter should be EL8MSWIN1253.

Database Server Hardware

The specifications for the database server (should be) specified by the RDBMS manufacturer. Strictly as an indication:

  2. Windows Server 2019 64-bit
  3. Linux 64-bit (Oracle DB)
  4. Linux 64-bit (SQL Server 2017 & 2019)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit

8 GB

Notes

  1. The above notes with regard to the DataBase Server processor are limited to Intel/AMD systems because during the installation the DataBase Server is usually selected to identify with the Application Server. However, if you choose non-intel-based systems, they will be used exclusively for a Database Server, not for Application. Thus, the specifications of a system are exclusively defined by the RDBMS manufacturer and not by SoftOne.
  2. The required database server memory is directly related to the size of the database, the active number of users and other characteristics of the installation.

Client Connectivity Tools

Client Connectivity Tools (by the RDBMS manufacturer) will be required in the following cases:

Client Connectivity Tools will not be required in clients' machines (usually remote) which do not operate (additionally) as Application Servers but communicate with an Application Server on a separate machine (possibly the same as the one with the DataBase Server)

Note: The client tools of the database must be installed on the other computers as well, except server computers, in accordance with the database manufacturer's instructions. In the case of a remote terminal, it is not required to install the client tools of the database because the client-server application model will be used.

 Other requirements:

 Optional business applications & tools

Networks & Telecommunications

An Internet connection is recommended in order to utilize SoftOne Services.

SQL Server Express Limitations

Microsoft SQL Server Express is a powerful and reliable free data management system for small-scale Soft1 installations, with no more than 5 users (web users included too).
Here are some of the most important differences of the SQL Express compared to SQ Standard Edition:

SQL Standard SQL Express
Maximum Database Size524 PB 10 GB (1)
Compute Capacity4 sockets or 24 cores 1 socket or 4 cores (2)
Maximum Memory128 GB1.4 GB (3)

Notes

  1. SQL Express is limited to a 10 GB database. Splitting data over multiple DBs and then cross-link them by using certain applications will lead to more than 10 GB of data on the server. Be aware though, that your system's performance will be harmed severely if this cannot be achieved. If your data keep growing you are going to hit the 10GB limit resulting in the system's failure and possible data loss. To avoid this, you will need to upgrade your SQL Server.
  2. SQL Express allows for lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores. This way, your system's computing power is not fully used and this may result in critical problems in case of adding more data or users to your database. On the other hand, SQL Server Standard allows for 4 sockets or 24 cores.
  3. SQL Express allows for using 1.4 GB of RAM (per instance). On the other hand, SQL Server Standard reaches 128 GB.
